BLOG: It's Not About David Foster Wallace, Really

David Foster Wallace hanged himself on Sunday. The NPR commentator today said it really well, so I'll let him handle that part.

I love his writing, and for many years touted Infinite Jest as my favorite novel. Me, a man who hates naming favorites had no problem with that one.

Several weeks ago, I finished a tune that had been haunting me for months. The experience was cathartic, but I didn't have the energy then to work out the chords with Isaac and record it, though he was more than willing.

Tonight, we release "Ravi Taught Me" to the world. It's the most personal song I've ever written, and it's about another man who took his own life.

Yours,

The video is low-key, but the lyrics are NSFW. :)

And then we went ahead and shot a bonus video just for giggles:

BLOG: New Alexa Woodward recording project

After hearing the work I did on J Wagner's new album, I was stoked and honored that at this year's Kerrville Wine & Music Festival Alexa Woodward asked me to engineer & produce her next album.

BLOG: Meanwhile, back at the Ranch ...

Yes, it's time again for the Kerrville Wine and Music Festival, affectionately known as Little Folk, to relax, play and listen to music all night, and engage in hippy hijinks.

Little Folk will always be special for the Squad, because it's where we first performed our songs someplace other than Reed's living room and the positive reactions and love we encountered gave us the boost we needed to start playing open mics around Austin.

A year flew by so quickly, and the Squad moves with the times, so join us for a drink and tune at Quiet Valley Ranch (hydration is vital!) and we'll see you September 3rd at the Red Eyed Fly for our Summer and CD Combo-Release Fiesta!

Until then, enjoy this clip of the old Gene Autry science fiction movie serial, The Phantom Empire! I watched these as a kid and loved them. Yay YouTube!

NEWS: Summer Ends - Summer Begins!

It's a week from now, on Wednesday. The sun was scorching all day, but now it's night, when the darker impulses emerge. You find yourself searching for something ... something, but you don't know what it is.

We'll be freshly back from the Kerrville Wine and Music Festival, so we'll be tan, strung out from lack of sleep, and probably hallucinating. Bruce may finally show his belligerent side, if you're lucky.

In other words, the perfect recipe for World Racketeering Squad's triumphant return to the Red Eyed Fly as we close out the Summer. We celebrated the beginning of summer in May, and now it's time for summer the season to take a hike - we want to focus on Summer Glau for a while.

The Squad brings back songs that were on hiatus for 3 months and knocks Red River on its ass with a reprise of our rock opera single, "Omega in Love versus The Supermonsters."

All that and the first 15 audience members get a free copy of our new demo CD More Needful Things, featuring a brand new recording of "Needful Things" ... and more!

See you soon,

I got word yesterday from Mitch, our excellent and talented photographer, that our photographs from the August Red-Eyed Fly gig are ready and in the mail to WRS HQ in beautiful northeast Austin. You can rest assured, we'll be posting those here, there and everywhere when they arrive.

We're also in the process of creating our new CD which we'll be distributing at shows, including our newest recording, "Needful Things", aka "the tin whistle song"!

Stay tuned for news on how to get CDs as well as t-shirts and stickers!

BLOG: Johann gets his Jam On - Bruce Produces

Johann Wagner proudly releases his new album, "Desert Needle Grass" this Friday at Cafe Mundi, and the Squad will be there to celebrate.

Not only are we friends and fans of the studly but sensitive Johann, but we're also the power behind the music. Even though Bruce Chandler rocks 24/7 to the WRS beat, he somehow found time to record and produce Johann's new album. Bruce just can't help himself. So much awesome requires multiple outlets.

So when you come to Care Mundi Friday, not only will you bask in the boyish grin of Johann Wagner, you'll also get to hear what Bruce sounds like playing percussion for such a fine folksinger AND purchase the triumph of musical magic that the Wagner-Chandler combo brings to the world.

See you there!

BLOG: Recording "Needful Things

Just got back from Bruce's place where we laid down a host of epic guitar tracks for "Needful Things", our tin-whistle song.

The main part is one I've been playing live forever, but once we started putting down tracks on top of that I was able to find some really interesting themes and melodies that I hadn't thought of before.

It makes the song slightly more melancholy at the ending, and I can totally see it being used in a teenage soap opera TV show or movie. The girl who broke up with her boyfriend can be sitting in the park where they used to hang out, or by the window with the rain streaming down the pane, thinking about the good times past...

Producers, give us a call!

Now we've got everything recorded but the tin whistle and the organ. The goal is to have "Needful Things" mixed and in the can soon enough to make 3-track CDs available at the Red-Eyed Fly on Sept 3 and after.

NEWS: It's Sunny's Birthday!

There are lots of folks who have been good to the Squad this last year as we grew from a 2-piece neophyte group to a 3-piece performing powerhouse (with a 4-piece barbershop quartet thrown in for flavor) and this Tuesday one of them is celebrating his birthday: Sunny!

Since the Squad is also celebrating the 1-year anniversity of our first performance ever (at Reed's All-the-Way Party), we're gung-ho about all things birthday, so were celebrating Sunny, revolving around the sun, and all things that happen but once a year in an all-star show Sunny's put together.

Let the Sunnyshine in on Tuesday, August 19th at Trophy's on South Congress. Things kick off around 10PM and there's no telling when the Squad will play our accoustic set in the happy mayhem. Update - looks like the Squad take the stage for our mini-set just after 10!

Guess you'll just have to party all night, again!

At Sunny's birthday
At Sunny's birthday
We'd like to wish you all what you would wish yourself
On Sunny's birthday
It's Sunny's birthday
And it's so good to have you back from off the shelf

BLOG: RIP - Robert Hazzard, writer of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"

The composer of one of the funnest songs I know has died: Link

It's a sad day in pop music.

But, on a brighter note, I saw Weird Al Yankovic perform last night in Dallas and it was an amazing show! Over 2 hours of hilarity, finished off with a live version of the 11 minute epic Alba, Alber, Albor, Albuquerque.

NEWS: Red-Eyed Fly gig a big success!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Red-Eyed Fly last night to see us! We had a great time playing and having so many friends cheering us on was a big part of that.

Megan Allen sang tremendously on her debut performance of our rock opera "Omega in Love Versus The Supermonsters". We showcased some of our favorite covers, specifically "Rock Me Amadeus" and "Under My Thumb", the latter with Reed Oliver on keyboards.

Reed also played more bass than he ever has in our set, and demonstrated that all his practice is definitely paying off.

Oh, and we had a professional photographer in to document the whole event! We'll be sharing some of the photos when they come in.

Thanks to Jess, Irma, Sarah, Justin, and all the others who joined us last night. We'll see you in September!

I wanted to share with you wonderful news from the Capital Area Food Bank -- they sent me a lovely thank you letter, and said that the money we raised was enough to provide 440 meals! I was thrilled to hear it, and wanted to tell all of y'all too!

Thanks to everyone who attended and helped out for this good cause, and had a great time doing it!

NEWS: KITT, Cylons, and Red River Clubs

There's a few things in this world with red eyes. You might recall a certain talking car that used to bail David Haselhoff out of trouble, and Battlestar Galactica fans know that metal skin and a moving red light where the eyes should be means death on the move.

But to Austinites, red eyes, when they don't require visine and maybe cutting back on the herb before work, can most easily be found on Red River. That's where the Squad is headed on Tuesday, August 5th, for our Red River debut at the Red Eyed Fly. We play at 10PM, and there's a fine line up of folks both before and after us.

To celebrate, we're bringing back our rock opera, "Omega in Love versus the Supermonsters" with a new voice in the role of Christina: fan, friend, and sound gal extraordinaire Megan Allen!

Join our invasion of Red River, and we promise there will be red eyes enough for even your multi-faceted self!

See you there!

Tuesday Aug 5
    * Red-Eyed Fly ALL AGES
    * 10:00pm - 11:00pm $5 adults / $8 minors

In the meantime, here's a terrifying David Haselhoff video featuring KITT:

BLOG: Getting What You Wanted?

The Squad has been back in the studio, and since we like to share the excitement, we've brought you an early early version of our tin whistle hit, Needful Things.

We expect the entire tune to transform as we add electric guitar, replace the tin whistle scratch track, and mix in other surprises. Soon, it's back Bruce's studio for more fun, so have a listen before this version retreats into WRS history. And the 20th Anniversary Boxed set, but who has the patience to wait for that?

Needful Things

BLOG: It's a classic, Dr. Jones!

Sometimes we love music videos from the past. And sometimes we love music videos recently "unearthed" from the past and performed by people who were kids in 1984.

All that aside, just gotta love the vibe from "Indianna Jones!"

And see more of the magic on Dogtoons!

BLOG: Bill Davis Happy Hour at Club Deville every Wednesday!

Our buddy Bill Davis, the drunken Earl of Rock, plays Happy Hour show every Wednesday from 6-9PM at Club Deville.

Not only is it a laid-back good time, but you can catch all of Bill's majesty and antics and still make it to The Parlor on time for our show!

I tried to find a video to help convince you of Bill Davis' charms, but it seems there's an internet conspiracy to keep him down and out of sight. Fight the Man! See Bill Davis tonight!

BLOG: Farewell Solar Tuesdays!

We just got back from our last Solar Tuesday gig for the summer. It was a great time, at a very cool venue with a lot of good friends.

Tonight the star attraction (aside from us, of course!) was the disco ball hanging from the cherry picker in the parking lot, and the enormous movie projections on the side of the building as we played.

Thanks to Comfortable Billy, to Rusty Montana, to Megan, Bernadette, Alicia, and all our friends who came out to see us play! Some pictures were taken and they'll be posted as soon as they develop.

Next up, tomorrow's gig at The Parlor!

Reed & Isaac said I had to start pulling some blog duty or I'd have to stay late after rehearsal. Which, actually, wouldn't be that bad - they have a Wii.

This weekend my and my buddy Danny Dolinger did some recording. Here is what came of it. It's Danny's parody of Robert Earl Keen"s "The Road Goes on Forever". Enjoy!

Remember back in the late 70s, before you were born when mellow tunes (and lots of disco) ruled American Top 40 and you cheered when "You Light Up My Life" was at #1 one more week?

NEWS: Double Dealing Triple Threat

It's true! The Squad has been hiding things from people who weren't a the last show, and we can't take it any more! It's been eating us up inside like chest-busting parasite, so before we set the acid-blooded offspring of our conspiracy of confidentiality loose upon the world, we must come clean.

We have a new bass player. His name is Reed Oliver.

I know. I know. You're saying, "Isn't Reed Oliver the name of the Squad's lead singer? The platinum-topped paladin of playfullness? The tin-whistling troubador?"

Yes, that's who Reed Oliver was. But he has been transformed into a man on the down-low, who reaches for the heights, but does it not a little down and dirty. Reed Oliver is ... a bass player.

Who sings, too.

See the emerging glory of this new identy, WRS as a Power Trio, at two, yes two gigs in the coming week:

First, return for a last hurrah to Solar Tuesdays. When a star dies, it either expands like a Red Giant into the ether, or it collapses, producing black holes, white dwarfs, or maybe even neutron stars. As the sun gods collapse from the effort of sustaining so much Rock and Roll, how will it all go down? Come find out! It's BYOB, free and easy, and a great stage to rock on. Jazz surfers Rusty Montana open!

Then, join the party as WRS kicks off the birthday celebration of the Barebones Orchestra at The Parlor. If you haven't seen BBO, you don't know the 12-member majesty of their sweet sweet jams and tawdry grooves. Lotsa folks will be there, so come early to get a table and a slice of The Parlor's truly excellent pizza.

See you there,
BLOG: When Bill Speaks, Do You Listen?

As a band, we generally write songs about love, and rock, and loss, and science, and girls, and fiction, and girls in science fiction. I never thought Bill Davis would make his way into a World Racketeering Squad tune, but sometimes we must bow to the irresistible weave of fate, and let the Drunken Earl of Rock have his say. All two words of it.

Here's "Bill Says":

Let us know what you think!

LYRIC: Bill Says

And if Bill says it's a classic blunder,
You'd best believe it's true.
Though there might be alternatives to going under,
There's none that you would choose.

'Cause when Bill says it's a classic blunder,
You'd best believe it's true.
Though there might be alternatives to going under,
It's nothing you would do.

You're going down, toiling in your mock obscurity,
In your home town, drunk upon the dead-end surity.
Look in their eyes, see the glimmer of light,
Rocket is rising, but just not tonight,
By next week you'll be sure.

Flirting with time, making out around the corner walk,
The honest man's crime, wanting to believe your doubletalk.
Making your bed in sincerity's shoes,
Talking the talk, but you're fighting to lose,
When Verity gets out.

It's the way of the world,
It's your way out of time,
If you're not on the map,
Then your path is a lie.
In the kingdom you choose,
All you have is your vote,
That's when your drunken Earl takes note.

Walking around, full of all the rock idolatry,
In every new town, selling off the pre-teen poetry.
Getting a buzz off the glamor of youth,
We are the new men, declaring the truth,
That shapes before your eyes.

NEWS: Gods in Hamster Wheels

For our fans and our music, the Squad will brave all terrors, defy all laws.
--Book of Racketeering, chapter 1, verse 24

In pursuit of this lofty mission, we have taken it upon ourselves to ally with Sustainable Waves as they take the very gods of the heavens, Apollo, Helios, Ra, Surya deva, and Bast, and put them to work generating power for rock and roll. Imagine the shining gods toiling to drive the turbines to power mighty light shows and dazzling amplifiers, like deities in stupendous hamster wheels.

Tonight, you will see the fruits of those labors. That's right, World Racketeering Squad will round out a night of solar-powered magnificence started by the Sheep Thrills and Cholo Gun in a band-against-band song-off.

Bring a six-pack and enjoy the neighborhood ambiance while you rock out. The action starts at 8PM, preceded by spinning DJs, and WRS wraps up by 10PM, followed by more spinning DJs.

The Squad is introducing new material and other surprises. Things will happen tonight for the very first time. Make sure you can tell everyone you were there when it started!
NEWS: And on the Third Day ...

Blessings Racketeers!

As you well know, several immensely influential folks throughout history got a major kick out of doing things on the third day. Well, the Squad is not afraid to learn from the best, so starting today, Sunday June 15, we will be performing somewhere, somehow, every three days until we drop from too much nirvana.

The Beginning
We kick off our Third Day Tour opening for our old friends, the magnificently, charismatically talented bluesqueezebox at Red's Scoot Inn. We kick things off at 9PM, so come early and stick around after to let the accordiophonic stage mastery of bluesqueezebox make everything dark and good and sexy.

The Homecoming
Three days later, June 18th, you will find WRS at our home base and the epicenter of the eternal circus-quake, The Carousel Lounge. Danny Dolinger, or possibly even the miraculous Chartreuse Microbus (last seen blowing minds at The Parlor, headed for parts unknown) will lay out the appetizers with the Squad rolling in for the main course till midnight. Always excellent. Always free.

The Muppetocracy
If muppets ruled the world, even the terrible trials of green being would be uplifted to their rightful place of honor. That's why our favorite sexy geekolicious siren Sofia Grey organized a Muppet Hoot at Ruta Maya, June 21st 2-5 PM, to celebrate all things Henson-born, Oz-voiced, and rainbow-connected. Bring the kids, both inner and outer, and get down in a sweet and fuzzy kinda way. $7 cover or $5 per young person

The Incandescence
The final stop on the WRS Third Day Tour justifies what summer is all about. Hot hot heat and the sun that just keeps coming. Don't tell Ra, but he's a dadburn resource, and our pal Comfortable Billy has put together Solar Tuesdays to put the sun gods to work. Imagine a full stage setup, built for solid rock entertainment, entirely powered by solar energy. In the future, fossil fuels will be nostalgia, not energy policy, so let the record show that the Squad is an early adapter. Two rocking bands 8-10PM with WRS in the number two spot.

The Merchandising
To celebrate this plethora of rock opportunities, we are pleased to announce that WRS t-shirts will be on sale at all gigs. Black and white with no apologies, this is the shirt that tells the world you were there when it all began. $10 while supplies last.

Good things come in threes, and so will you as you join the Squad on our Third Day Tour. The guards may get drunk, so listen to the angel when he tells you what he told the ladies, "WE IS RISEN!"

NEWS: Pizzarific Parlor Premiere!

As you know, the Squad likes to combine music with pizza. We did it at Conans, we'll do it again.

But now a new opportunity arises: hip northside pizza bar The Parlor has invited us to bring our rock to a new venue, and we have accepted!

Located on the cool dog-leg created when North Loop meets 53rd Street, The Parlor is known for its specialty pizzas and the dark images of rock icons on its walls.

We're thrilled to be playing our first show there on Tuesday, June 3rd. We're titillated to have Chartreuse Microbus's pure entertainment showdown open the show. Reed is driving in from the Kerrville Folk Festival that day to make this happen. In fact, everyone is so explosively pumped that Jonny_Dub will return to play one last show with the Squad!

Did you miss the last Carousel show? Do you want to be able to tell all the cool kids in 2017 that you were there when Jonny_Dub played his last show with World Racketeering Squad? Do you live for that apocalyptic/transformative moment before everything changed? Do you ever get hungry rocking out but can't tear yourself away from the stage for long enough to feed your head?

You can be satisfied!

Join WRS and Danny Dolinger at The Parlor, and make those dreams come true!
NEWS: Out in a Blaze of Glory

The Squad held forth at the Carousel Lounge last night. In part, it was an experiment. For the first time, we played an entire show without a set list. For a big fan of planning like me, this was a revalation more than a revolution, because we got to find our way through the night, exploring rather than simply following the tracks to our familiar destination. That was cool.

What made it even cooler was the combination of our home advantage at the Carousel and the marvelous folks who came out to support us. My old neighbor and playwright extraordinaire Hank Schwemmer, a posse from my work at Apple, Ally Means, herself a snazzy performer, fans from Comfort Fest, Thomas Monclova of the Barebones Orchestra, Ms. Megan, who is not only our most loyal fan but also performed "Omega in Love" with us for the first time without having rehearsed it (mad props Megan!), and many others.

The night started mellow, as Isaac and I made our acoustic way through WRS classics and tunes we don't get to play with the full band. Isaac brought out his Devo-esque rocker "Terrible Feeling," and a jump to keyboards led to the premiere performance of "Dreams of Svengali."

And then the rock began. As we powered through the set, the energy in the room started to hum, then throb, then explode into action as the crowd wildly gyrated and the band kicked it up even higher in response. It's no exagerration if I say this was our best show ever, and the cherry on top was the encore of "Electromagnetic Pulse" requested by none other than Moy, the awesome bartender (go to the Carousel, drink heartily, tip mightily).

That was the climax, and the weary Squad eventually made our way back to WRS-HQ to unload and decompress. But it wasn't over. Jonny_Dub had some news. We had just played our last show with our friend, compatriot, and bass player. Last night, Jonny_Dub requested to be discharged from the Squad. So here it is:

Jonny_Dub, the World Racketeering Squad hereby honorably discharges you from service. We loved the spiritual energy you brought to the band, the deep knowledge of vocals and how to bring them to new heights, the dedication you had to perfection and innovation, the fun you brought to every rehearsal and performance, and of course the steady reliability your bass presence brought to every song.

Goodbye Jonny.

We'll see you soon, but we'll miss you sooner.
